Martial Arts History

The Martial Arts History in general is fairly complex.

The origin is basically impossible to determine due to lack of documentation but early signs can be seen. It is noticeable in things such as....

- Gladiator Combat

- Greek Wrestling Competitions

- Soldiers in Battle

The best evidence of martial arts history comes from very early literature and early weapons that have been discovered. kung fu The literal meaning of martial arts is "arts of war." This term originates from early Europeans referring to their fighting practices.

Most people hear martial arts history and assumes Asian origin, however, every country at some point in history has created some form of fighting style that they can call their own. There are many styles of martial arts, each with there own origins, founders, strengths, and weaknesses. Please visit our styles page where we go into much more depth on each style and the aspects of their systems.

Will Martial Arts Help You Defend Yourself?

Often times people will ask me, "Big, are self defense classes really worth going to? Will they surely help me if I get into trouble?"

The answer to both question is yes..and no...

Self defense classes are a good starting point if you want to learn how to defend yourself, and they do make you more aware of what is going on around you. In some cases, they have helped people escape from dangerous situations.

So that's a good thing, and I'm not knocking their value. But if you want to really survive on the street, you have to be armed in some way.

You don't have to carry a gun to be well armed. There are many non-lethal ways to defend yourself on the street.

You could invest in a martial arts program, but that takes a good amount of time and effort, something not all of us have.

The other concern here is that, most of the crooks and junkies roaming around have some martial arts experience or practice as well, and you'll never be sure who's going to win, and who's going to come out on top in an unpleasant situation.

In an unpleasant scenario, you want to win, and get out from that bad situation as quick as possible. And you want a first strike that gets the job done.

Most of these junkies and goofies, they don't expect their supposed victim to strike or to retaliate at all. Their very weapon against you is also simple, your fear, their advantage of knowing the street more than you, then surprise you with their presence and intimidate you, these are their basic weapons. Looking at martial arts history shows this.

They usually jump out of dark or dim places, and when you are unaware they rush you, and threaten you. And if they see your fear crawling all over you, they'd turn you into their victim and then, poof! They're gone.

It would take you much time, years, and effort of martial arts training to master the skills and ability to beat the baddies at their own game.

There is a easier way to more than hold your own on the street.

As I've mentioned earlier, these junkies never expect their supposed victim to strike or fight back.

The first thing you should carry is a personal alarm. A personal alarm is easily activated by just pushing a button. The alarm makes all kinds of noise, usually at 120-130 decibels. That's Guns and Roses loud, and mooks hate noise, often running at the first sound. Once you activate an alarm, only you can turn it off. Noise breaks up the mook's game, it throws them off balance. Many times that's the only thing needed, something to break the pattern of the game.

The second thing you should carry have big strike capability; it should be powerful enough to knock down a large male easily, and keep him down with no effort. You don't want to get wrapped up physically, you want to hit and run.

I recommend Stun guns and pepper spray here.

But they are not lethal stuff, they only have twenty to thirty minute-long effects and don't cause deadly or permanent damage.

They just prevent anyone from bringing you any permanent damage. You fight back, defending yourself, and get out of the area quickly.

If you want to be a powerhouse, and you can be, regardless of your size or athletic prowess, with self defense products you are on top of every mook, crook and junkie.

And don't forget, they don't work effectively if you don't have them on you.

To get self-esteem as well as effective protection, buy pepper spray. That's the kind of stuff the Big Kahuna does.
