Judo is a Japanese art which means "gentle way". It is a sport that came from the older Japanese art of
jujitsu
around the late 19th century.
Techniques include Judo throws,
grappling
, ground fighting, chokes, and joint locks. These are the "meat" of the art. Meaning the objective is to throw the opponent off balance and usually grapple until one person is subdued, either by a lock or a choke. The part you don't hear about as much is the fact that there are practiced strikes and even weapon forms, however, since competition is such a big part of Judo the majority of practitioners do not focus on these.
Founder
Jigoro Kano
(picture to the right is Kano used by wikipedia.com)Kano was a Japanese educator who came from a rich family. The advantage for Kano was that his father was a goverment official and priest. An extremely small frame consisting of a whole 100lbs forced this man into martial arts to protect himself. He started with
Jujutsu
but moved towards doing more kata not long after that. A few famous moves he came up with include the "shoulder wheel" and the "floating hip"
