Let us be your guide to all things related to these ancient and some not so ancient arts. We plan to be as complete as possible. Whether you are just curious or already active you are sure to find plenty to interest you on this site.
We give you as much information as we can gather about the different types of martial arts and the different martial arts styles.
Basically, all it means is, if we can get the information, then it will be on this site.
From the history of Chinese martial arts and even ancient Chinese weapons to Israeli martial arts, from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques and Jiu Jitsu moves to Karate stances and Karate belt colors.
In our list of martial arts styles we give lots of information such as its history, its most famous practitioners etc. So, for example, if we are talking about martial arts in Japan, then you can expect that section to contain details on Japanese martial arts styles and Japanese martial arts terms and anything else related to that topic.
If the section is about Muay Thai, then there will be information on everything related to to it, for example Muay Thai principles.
We have just taken over this site so all the more detailed, relevant information will be linked from top to bottom on the navigation on the left hand side, or from links on this page.
List of Martial Arts Styles
We will start with a list of different types of martial arts and styles in (hopefully) alphabetical order. There is always some confusion when changing Chinese characters, into our alphabet. There is an accepted standard that is used now, it is called Pinyin, so watch out for that.So if you see the Pinyan version of Gongfu , then it's "our" Kung Fu, similarly Taijiquan is Tai Chi Chuan. It's not a big deal, and if you look at it you'll probably know what it is anyhow. Just thought we would mention it. The descriptions below are just a very brief outline, a kind of introduction. The relevant section will carry more detail.
Remember now, no fighting over which is the most deadliest style of martial arts!
Aikido
One of the newer martial arts in Japan, (wasn't founded until 1942) its style is spiral and circular like with the main intent being to immobilize the assailant through a series of throws and pins that uses evasion and the force of the attacker against him/herself.
Baguazhang
This style of martial arts is about evasion, agility and quick wit as opposed to strength. This style is permanent motion with lots of body movement and quick feet. It's reactive in the sense that you respond to the situation as it develops and it is the use of one of the best ancient Chinese weapons in the history of Chinese martial arts, the open palm(baguan) not a closed fist.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques owe a lot of their popularity to T.V. and Mixed Martial Arts events. UFC in particular is heavily reliant on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu moves. It is mat based with position being very important. There are four main positions each one offering a selection of moves.
Bushidokan
Bushidokan is an amalgam of Okinawa karate, Jiu Jitsu and Judo, however karate is the largest part of this type of martial arts. Very popular as nearer-to-the-bone type of self defense, it comprises of four sets of basic stances, strikes, blocks and kicks. However for self-defense there are many other options not covered in the basics as well as the choice of sparring, both contact and no-contact.
Capoeira
Capoeira is the name given to a selection of martial arts brought to Brazil by slaves from Africa. It evolved over the years to what it is today. A high-octane, high energy dance in a circle that relies on dodging for defense and leg sweeps for offense. The stance of the dancer is all important and from there flows everything elses. Very rare for hands or arms to be used either for defense or offense. Basically, it combines fight, dance, acrobatics, and music.
