A little about the Brazilian martial arts Capoeira...

When most people talk about the types of martial arts they almost invariably talk about the martial arts styles that were developed in the Far East in countries such as Japan, China, Korea, and Thailand.

While these styles of fighting are very well known and popular they are by no means the only ones around.

The Far East is also not the only region where martial arts have been created.

Israel is the home of the deadly art of Krav Maga, Russia is where the art known as Systema or Sambo came from and Brazil has given us the beautiful but deadly art of Capoeira, which has risen dramatically in popularity.

The Brazilian martial art is a combination of different influences brought together to create a very unique fighting style.

In addition to martial arts dance, sports, and music all play a part and as a result it is not only used for self defense, but for entertainment and physical fitness as well.

Make no mistake this art is a very physical art form too and it requires great skill, balance, speed, and coordination to master the art. Many well-known masters are quite often invited to start their own schools or to travel and teach in other nations.

This art is believed to have been created in the 16th century when the people of Brazil adopted African slavery. Although documentation pertaining to the origins is almost non-existent, oral histories leave little if any doubt at all that the art has its roots in Brazil.

It is the accepted theory that runaway slaves developed the art as a means of survival and self defense in a land where they had no specific knowledge of the terrain at least until escapee communities known as Quilombos began to spring up. The runaways also had to deal with colonial agents charged with capturing escapees.
